Amongst Friends

Dear Ma Hui and Li Xiao Feng,

What a wonderful surprise to see both of your artwork together in one presentation. You come from different backgrounds, live a different life, and have many different experiences. Your migration to Europe at one point in life you have in common. Both of you eventually settle in Amsterdam in Holland, a far and very different place from where you both came from. It was the city you first met and I met both of you.
Ma Hui stayed in Amsterdam, Li Xiao Feng went back to China in, lived and worked in Beijing a couple of years and resettled to his home town Chengdu in 2013. You now live thousands of miles apart, but keep in touch on a regular basis, you still see each other at least once a year.

This exhibition makes me understand better than ever before you are close friends that have long discussions about art and life, and more importantly about how art can reflect life in a subtle as well as convincing way. Although you excel in a different beauty I understand now you are kindred artistic spirits. Cause I think the question each of you ask yourself, and the goal each of you want to achieve with your respective work are similar: how to capture ones feelings, emotions, ones ideas and ideals. With all the twists and turns the human spirit makes.

Ma Hui shapes her stream of consciousness with brush and ink. Not in the style of traditional Chinese ink painting also known as shuimo, but very much in the spirit of that ancient genre. Her abstract works of ink wash are not about reality, not about a depiction of an object or an existing panorama, these works are all about capturing an emotional landscape.

Ink wash painting requires great skill and lots of concentration as everybody knows of the similar technique of calligraphy, a genre her father distinguished himself in. ‘I already knew how to work with ink, water and paper before I was born, as it were.’

The abstract art of Ma Hui looks spontaneous and at random, as natural a phenomenon as the blowing of the wind, but is in fact a well calculated guess after years of practice. The magic is in the movement of the hand of the master.

Li Xiao Feng operates in a similar way, he uses ink wash, but also acrylic as if it was ink. His art is  seldom completely abstract, although those works do exist, mostly he uses tonality, many schades of grey and sometimes a splash of colour to breed flowers. Not to breed existing flowers, his work is not a depiction of flowers in the conventional way, it is more a touchable, melancholic memory of a flower. They look like an old fashioned photograph in black and white of a flower isolated from reality.

The rhythm of the brushstrokes evokes not only the capricious movement and chaotic structure of the peddles, it’s also a metaphor for life that never stops changing. The art of Li Xiao Feng is quiet and calming, and like all intimate and introvert works of art they are open to suggestion. They are a vehicle for our soul, we can transfer our emotions to it.

The visual result may not be equal, in the end I think the elegance and grace of both of your work celebrates the lust for life.

I wish both of you all the very best.

Jhim Lamoree From Amsterdam with love, September 2016.
